1111. guess who!

all dressed up
putting on our best faces
mum’s the word!

Happy Halloween out there!

(This is an old photo from eight years ago. I just wanted to post something fun today!)

Breakfast is one of our favorite meals!😊😻

Last night we FaceTimed our Chinese takeout dinner together! 😋

1108. caution!

danger! danger!
warning all strangers:  enter
at your own risk!

For Halloween, you get to be anything that you want to be. What if Halloween were every day?

1107. who’s playing games?!

ace of spades
looks like a winner—
feeling lucky!

A little bit of nonsense is a good thing!

1106. this looks like fun!

everyone’s invited
to trick or treat with the
haunted horses!

Come one and all to a unique Halloween event for the whole family at the Northwestern Stables of Wissahickon Park. Saturday, October 28, 4:00 to 7:30PM. Come dressed for the occasion!  Trick-or-treat candy!  Horse rides!  Walkthrough of the stables!  Horses and handler’s will be dressed in costume!

1105. hand in hand

are you willing to dance?
yes, i will, she said, i will, i will,
and the band played on

“….and hand and hand on the edge of the sand, they danced by the light of the moon.”—from The Owl and The Pussy-Cat by Edward Lear.

(I took this photo from a video of us dancing together last week at the wedding celebration.)

1104. to be a tree

treeness:
what it means to be a tree

*
without a word
saying nothing….everything
its own poem

Along the creek, all the trees in autumn bloom…. but not that one.

1103. waiting for the bride

tired of sitting,
my eye roams the crowd
as the sun goes down
*
waiting for the bride
red socks and silver slippers….
hold that pose!

The bride was delayed, it was getting chilly, the chairs were uncomfortable, and the music was blaring in the loudspeaker behind my head! Sometimes it’s hard to just live in the moment!😆

1102. last night’s game

woo-woo!-woo!
final score: 6 to 1
Go Phillies!

Philadelphia Phillies are up 3 to 2 in the National league playoff games. One more win to go…then we’re off to the World Series.  Go Phillies!

1101. enough!

don’t stuff yourself
better to stop two-thirds full—
enough is enough!

That’s Tommy! He’s a cool cat. He lives in the woods and aims to stay healthy and happy.  When it comes to eating, he knows when he’s had enough. He walks away feeling satisfied, not stuffed. His motto is: Enough is enough! 😸

1100. oh….oh, nooo!

opening in the sky:
wicked witch of the east,
is she coming back?!

My first impression was, ‘oh, that’s beautiful,’ and then on looking closer I thought, ‘oh nooo, that’s the wicked witch of the east!’

The mind’s a funny thing, how it jumps from one idea to another, sometimes with pleasure, and sometimes with pain, and then sometimes with a good chuckle!

1099. toe to toe

stepping along
just singing my song
toe to toe

That’s Ruffer, getting his steps in day after day, rain or shine, no matter what!  How about you, are you doing the same?🐶

1098. cooking with Mimmy! 🤣

aii-yii-yii!!!
that’s the funniest one yet!
she forgot the squash!

This time of year when the weather gets chilly, I love making soups—thick, rich, hearty soups—to smile my belly.

So, last night I made Butternut Squash Soup. It’s a fave. I chopped onions and garlic and sautéed them in olive oil, then sprinkled in thyme, basil, and bay leaf….dropped in a can of red beans (or chickpeas are good too), half a can of fire-roasted tomatoes, and some water….tossed in a little salt, sugar, and cayenne.  I brought it all to a boil then slowed it down to a simmer. Then added chicken sausage—leave this out if you want to keep it vegetarian.  When it was done, I threw in a big bunch of fresh spinach leaves to wilt and added a spoon more of olive oil. I stirred then ladled it into a big bowl, sprinkled fresh grated cheese, and finally sat down to savor the soup with sourdough bread and green salad. Yum!

Tonight in the kitchen, I looked over on the counter and saw the squash that I had forgotten to add to last night’s Squash Soup. Aii-yii-yii!!! 🤣

1097. walking tall

hey, you!
looking up at me, are you
the village tiger?!
*
i watch it
silently…surely…slowly…
disappear

At dusk, crossing over the bridge by the little league field, I look down to see a wild cat crossing over the dry bedrock of the creek below. I pucker my lips and whistle. It turns at the sound and looks up, pausing for just a moment, then moves surely back toward me, looking up at me, step by step, walking tall like a little tiger…and then it vanishes.

1096. the sky

wow!
awesome, incredible
the sky
*
it’s blue
it’s grey or white or orange,
red or pink
*
the sky
says nothing and everything
wow!

The Taoists say….If you want to know about life, just look at nature.  Everything changes. Not a day goes by that I don’t look up at the sky. Wherever I am, whatever I’m doing, I pause and gaze a moment….in the early dawn, in the middle of the day, late afternoon as the sun settles down, at nighttime too. I never tire of looking up at the sky.

1095. what fun!

move it to the left!
move it to the right! jump up!…
now clap and wave!
*
tumbling down the hill
playing follow the leader
golden mushrooms

Some things never grow old. ‘Follow the Leader’ is one of those games played generation after generation by kids of all ages. Like so many kids games, it’s packed with lots of learning and plenty of fun. It can be played with just one leader and two followers, but as with most things, the more the merrier. Just look at those mushrooms! 😆

1094. horse tale

oh boy!
it fits me perfectly
my new raincoat
*
they say
today’s gonna rain all-day
oh boy!

I can’t help it, I just love wearing my new raincoat!😘

1093. feeling spacy?

somewhere
in the middle of space and time
shadows and light
*
counting cats—
another sleepless night?
or was it Batman?

According to Einstein, space-time is like a stage that remains in place, whether actors are treading its boards or not….even if there were no stars or planets dancing around the curvature, space-time would still be there.

1092. dancing girls

not knowing
what to do with herself,
turning to paper
*
cut….cutting,
turning, folding, becoming
a dancing girl

“Chopsticks” - 15x19” - Origami Mixed Media

I’ve always loved clothes.  And for many years, way back in my 20’s, I sewed and sewed to great satisfaction. I found pleasure in the many facets of the cut, the drape, or the cling of clothing. I loved fabrics, their colors and textures, the feel in my hands of silks, of cottons, of rayon, wool, and linen.  I enjoyed simply browsing around for fabrics and buttons, too. I had quite a collection. Now trading fabrics for paper, I can again find endless pleasure making all the clothes a girl could ever want!

1091. autumn leaves

standing tall
in the middle of it all—
let the leaves fall

It’s autumn, the season of falling leaves—the colors, the smells, the crunch.  I love it!

1090. symbols

symbols:
saying it all
without a word
*
symbols:
sometimes silence
can seem so loud
*
symbols.
lingering over a cup of tea….
speechless
*
symbols:
silent language of the soul—
pure poetry
*
symbols—
having nothing to say, yet
saying it all
*
symbols:
powerful little things, aren’t they….
what’s your thought?

This was a painting in a museum. What do you think?

1089. king of the hill

king of the hill
lording over the airwaves—
the village hawk

That’s the Oreland Hawk. He swaggers as he soars. Neither wind nor rain nor a ‘murder’ of crows deter him. When there are no trees, no problem. His indomitable spirit remains undaunted. He’s someone to look up to.

Earlier in the day I saw the hawk being chased by a pack of crows (a pack of crows is called a ‘murder’ of crows). They were all making a racket surrounding the hawk, who appeared nonchalantly undeterred as he simply kept flying, until the pack broke up and flew off and away.

1088. waving goodbye

at the end of the day
waving goodbye to the sun….
so long, my friend

Looking back at the sun last night settling down, I stopped and waved goodbye. The flags in the community garden were waving too.

1087. looking out

no wind, no rain
up on lookout mountain—
looking out
*
here and there
breathing in the morning air—
the birds and i

Rain in the forecast, but for the time being savoring the view, the birds and I.

There was a time for many years I lived up high. The windows were always open. I never tired of looking out, peering down over tops of trees, looking at people and cars passing by, at birds flying free, watching the sun rising up in the mornings, listening to children in the playground below. The music of life all around. I felt far away and yet right in the middle of it all.

1086. handle it!

feeling stuck
and out of sorts?
handle it!

It’s 7:17AM and I’m stumped. I don’t have a post, don’t know what to do so I call Dan. I say Dan, help, I don’t know what to do. He says that’s okay, you’ve been there before. Now’s the time for transparency. Take a picture, any picture will do, just look out the window, use that and say you’re stumped. I can’t do that, I’ll use an old picture. No, he says, don’t use an old picture. Take a picture of the worms you’re working on. Handle it!

Well okay, there they are.🪱 🪱🐛 🪱🐛

1085. hawk!

the hawk cries out
then lands on the fallen branch,
quiet as a mouse

A taker of lives—the hawk. Its shrill scream gets me every time. KEE-EEEEE-ARR!!  My breathing comes to a stop. I stay still….look up and search the sky….all without thinking.  I wonder…all the little birds and the rabbits and chipmunks and squirrels and mice, do they all do the same?

1084. the old trooper

as the sun goes down
he steps out on the lawn,
all legs & no head
*
the old trooper
patriotic ‘til the end,
still waving his flag

Who was that Old Trooper?

1083. last night’s dream

early this morning,
my last dream of the night
made me smile
*
grade school kids,
when i told them “i’m 77”
they all clapped!

I went to school to teach a class of children. We went around the room introducing ourselves—our names and how old we were. When it came my turn, I told them “Yulan, and sometimes Mimmy. I’m 77.” They all clapped!

No lie, that was my dream. I woke up with a smile.

1082. dreams

surrounded—
feeling right at home
in good company

Dreams can come true.  Follow your heart.  Keep on going.

1081. October moon

there she is,
she goes wherever she likes—
ha-ha-ha-ha ha!
