1797. silence

before the sun
a solitary voice calls out—
is that a katydid?

Lighting candles. Settling down to read, sitting by the open windows in the dark stillness before dawn. Listening. The occasional distinct howl of a distant dog, or could it be a coyote?  Silence.  Footsteps of a runner running by.  Silence.  A solitary katydid leisurely calling out.  Silence.  It’s the best time of day.
