“Morning at the Eastern Gate”  30” x 30” - Folded Paper on Fabric

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring is the title of a meditatively beautifully movie. It tells a story about a young Buddhist apprentice, mentored by an aging monk who guides him through life lessons to grow in wisdom and compassion. Their experience takes place in a secluded monastery somewhere in the Korean wilderness.

There are times I begin with the idea of doing one thing, and then, in time, the work takes over, slowly changing course and moving in a different direction, all of its own. To create this piece, well over 400 papers, 1-1/2 inch in size, were hand-cut, then carefully folded and wrapped around 1-inch blocks of card stock also cut by hand.
