1018. a lucky shot

up in the air
skyrocketing ‘cross the sky
a woodpecker

like a missile
from one tree to another
hits its mark

First, I heard the unmistakable resonant drumming. Then I spotted the large bird, a red-headed pileated woodpecker, drumming and drilling the long-dead wood of a tall tree. I grabbed my camera and clicked away, later to discover that I had caught the bird in full flight, wings tucked tight with it’s long beak forging ahead, gliding across the sky like a self-propelled missile.

It was a lucky shot!
