109. tattooed lady

holding back tears
trading pain for pleasure—
tattooed lady

—i wrote this haiku years ago after going to a tattoo convention and observing the many people lying on tables getting tattoos.  Originally, the poem was about a man, but I wanted to show beauty in this post and changed it to tattooed lady.  This picture is more recent and reveals both beauty and strength—strength of body, yes, but also strength of character and will  inherent in a woman.

beauty and power
masculine and feminine
the divine dance

— Leela is the divine play of creation.  In Hindu mythology, leela represents the idea that, as Shakespeare put it, “all the world’s a stage and men and women are merely players.” https://kavitasolomon.wordpress.com/2014/06/21/hindu-philosophy-leela-the-divine-play/

81. the journey

new year’s day—
resolving to explore
 another twenty good years

—this self-portrait, done in 2000, gives me pause to glance back and also look ahead; it’s a good reminder that life is ongoing, is created here and now from moment to moment, one day at a time.
