1021. Orion

after the rain
the sun comes out, and then
the moon

…but still no stars. There is too much ambient light. There was a time I could look up at the sky at night, on any night, and always find Orion, the Giant Hunter. It gave me a thrill. In Greek mythology, many stories were told about his birth and death. In the end, Zeus placed this hero warrior among the stars as the constellation of Orion. I miss looking up and seeing him. I’ll keep looking.

1020. lady of the house

lady of the house
lolling out on the lawn….
getting her d’s

Out in the open, lounging in the sun on the lawn of an old house down along the creek, there she was, totally at ease like she owned the place. It took me by surprise. This doe was totally exposed yet appeared unconcerned and completely at ease.

1019. under the moon

even in moonlight
wind blows and the grass is green
empty birdhouse

Everything’s greener this year and the tall summer grasses seem taller than ever. Birds come and go.

1018. a lucky shot

up in the air
skyrocketing ‘cross the sky

like a missile
from one tree to another
hits its mark

First, I heard the unmistakable resonant drumming. Then I spotted the large bird, a red-headed pileated woodpecker, drumming and drilling the long-dead wood of a tall tree. I grabbed my camera and clicked away, later to discover that I had caught the bird in full flight, wings tucked tight with it’s long beak forging ahead, gliding across the sky like a self-propelled missile.

It was a lucky shot!

1017. cooling off

Excessive Heat Warning for the next 48 hours! Temperatures in the 90’s. No problem for this little bird.

1016. having a little fun

taking a picture
focusing on the white wall.
omg a dinosaur

Early Tuesday morning in Lambertville, and the art and antique shops were still closed, so we just roamed around looking to see what we could see to photograph. Dan found a white brick wall!😆 and I found a dinosaur!😘

1015. down to earth

resting my head
on the back of my chair
getting older

“I have reached an age, where if someone tells me to wear socks, I don’t have to.” Albert Einstein.

I don’t mind getting older. It’s natural. It happens to everything: people, animals, flowers, trees, books, buildings, stories, all sorts of ideas. Why deny it? Why make getting old a bad thing or something to resist? It is what it is, a natural phenomenon. As I age and become wiser, I realize how little I understand, how much there is still to learn. After all these years, the old girl is still asking why?

1014. peaches

in spite of the heat
this peach tree stops her cold.
makes her want to steal!
*
plump, juicy peaches.
oh, how easy it would be
to steal one or two!

Did she? Or, didn’t she? 😉

1013. on the bridge

cool evening breezes
carry my scent to the deer.
she looks up…i wave

On the bridge again taking an after-dinner walk. Dan was  throwing bread down to the carp and the turtles in the creek. I was simply looking all around and taking it all in. Then the great blue heron flew out from under the bridge and brought my eyes way off to a deer crossing over a tiny island to feed. I watched awhile. She stopped and looked up at me. I waved.

1012. mating game

in rapture,
high on each other,
two raptors.
*
swirling around
in the big open sky,
two hawks.
*
higher and higher,
even the hawks fierce gaze
penetrates softly.
circling close, then closer,
the sun lusters brightly.

Catching sight of a hawk up in the sky, I nearly always stop to gaze, captivated by the unfettered power swirling with ease and swagger. Somehow, it always grounds me. On this morning, I was treated by two raptors, high on each other, in rapture.

1011. a cat

For some of us, life can be so simple.

1010. Matisse

this woman
immortalized in stone
did he love her?

Late last year, the Philadelphia Museum of Art hosted an exhibition of works by Henri Matisse. I took this picture. From time to time, it makes me wonder. Mattise once said, “I do not literally paint what I see, but the emotion it produces upon me.” I can almost feel him worshiping her.

1009. singing to the sun

on top of the hill,
on top of the tree, a bird
singing to the sun

It was a long way off. I heard it, but couldn’t see it until I took a picture and zoomed in. I am always amazed at how the voice of a tiny bird can ring so loud and clear.

1008. hotter

on its way down
getting hotter and hotter
the sun

After ice cream, walking around the neighborhood. It was a sultry evening. The air was hot and humid, still in the 80s long after 8 o’clock. We were feeling the heat, eyes burning, sweat clinging to our bodies all the way down to our elbow creases. As we walked on slower and slower, the heat seemed to build hotter and hotter. We looked up at the sun.

1007. hidden lake

so bright
under the silvery moon.
rings of fishes

“Hidden Lake” - 10 x 8” - Paper

Here’s my latest paper painting, featuring origami fishes and trees. It was inspired by my recent visit to the lake region of northeastern Pennsylvania. These fishes and trees are folded from 1-1/2” sheets of paper.

1006. the tree and i

sudden shower
in the middle of heat waves
 getting drenched—
i’ll bet this tree loves it
who needs an umbrella!

This picture reminds me of that summer Sunday when day after day of sultry heat and humidity, the forecast called for thunderstorms. I waited and waited until finally the skies opened at last and the rains poured down and I ran outside, looked up at the sky, held out my arms and laughed out loud!

1005. family

all in a row
one after another

Walking along the shoreline, I stopped to gaze out at a family of ducks paddling downstream on the lake. Sweet!

1004. more time

lifting off
the great blue heron
and it’s shadow

One of the pleasures of aging is having more time…. more time in the mornings to just sit and read poetry. More time to enjoy quiet conversation,  have a second cup of tea, to linger outside and look up at the sky and feel the sun or the moon or smell the air. And sometimes, when I’m lucky, to walk leisurely over the bridge and look down to see the great blue heron opening its wonderful wings, lifting off, and flying away.

1003. more…

noonday sun
appearing…disappearing
a bee
*
again and again
diving into the blossoms, this bee
can’t get enough

More, more, more…more. Why do we always want more? Why is that? Why is it we just can’t seem to get enough. Is it our nature—people, animals—are we all the same?  For me, I suppose, it is the same. Haiku—I just can’t get enough.

1002. the shrooms

meet the shrooms:
after all these years,
still in love
*
hey look:
this mushroom couple,
so in love

I couldn’t decide which haiku to use, so here’s both.  Hey, look—there’s an interloper….that’s a slug sliming in on the scene! 🐌

1001. a moment in time….

took off my shoes
to take a picture—
just for fun!
*
look down at my feet:
we’ll, i guess that’s about it.
just this

Just one of those moments….

1,000. morning practice

creating
 something to say, searching—
a thousand mornings
*
another haiku
this one makes a thousand—
smiling
*
how you start your day
makes a difference, the man said—
try smiling

This post is my morning practice. I have for the past thousand mornings been writing this haiku-photo blog, searching for words to express thoughts and feelings. Feeling mostly eager and inspired, though often at-a-loss, uncertain, resistant, sometimes happy or sad and even angry, but that was only once. And at the end of every morning I have given thanks, placed my palms together in front of my heart with a gentle bow of my head. Gasho🙏

999. the heat

summer.  the heat
as the sun goes down
fires up the sky
*
softer and softer
grow the embers, and
then it’s cool

Making friends with the heat. Hot humid muggy days can sometimes feel like things are closing in. Finding the beauty in what seems unbearable, makes those things easier to bear.

998. five ducks

at Shohola Falls
finding a quiet spot
to cool down

Our recent trip to the Lake Region of northeastern Pennsylvania was capped off with a visit to Shohola Falls.  It was stunning. Look for my Facebook feed that shows a short video to watch and listen to the falls.

997. all about dogs

this old dog—
that’s me, just saying—
getting my dog fix!
*
one on my lap
and one at my feet—
happy as a dog!

I was born in the Chinese Year of the Dog and I can feel dog energy in my bones. My time at the Lake House has been hanging with dogs. That’s Poppyseed sitting on my lap and Griff over there on his bed. I’m so happy I can almost feel a wag in my tail! 🐶

996. good morning

on the lake
not a cloud in the sky—
good morning moon

We were invited to visit friends at their Lake House in Hawley, PA in the Poconos. Here is the view this morning.

995. American girl

on the go
one foot up in the air
little runaway

Yesterday at the 4th of July Parade, my camera caught this little girl with her blonde curls—dressed for the occasion in red, white, blue—running away!

994. 10 years

the artist’s wife
taking a picture of
the artist

No, I’m not his wife, but I like the haiku. I also like this photo and wanted to post it to honor and celebrate ten years together of what seems like a lifetime of tears and laughter, learning and growing, creating and sharing, dreaming and being in love. 🐶 🦊 ❤️

993. yo!

50 years
and still in love with Rocky
yo!

This is a photo from the last time I visited the Philadelphia Museum. It could be any time or every time at the museum. People are always standing in line, waiting for their turn to pose with Rocky and connect with his inspiring, uplifting spirit—just for a little while.

It happened in Philadelphia, the movie, ‘Rocky.’ It’s the ultimate, feel-good story of transcendence and simple love. “Movies like Rocky happen once in a blue moon,” one critic wrote back in 1976 when the movie was made. If you listen to the news today, the world now seems to be going crazy and crazier. I think we need another blue moon.

992. in the skinny

taking a bath,
baring its orange breast—
fat and happy!

All puffed out, looking fat and happy, that little robin dipped and splashed and fluttered and fluffed its head and wings and chest and feet again and again!  Ahh, yes, nothing beats a refreshing bath in the cool outdoors! I watched and thought to myself, I wouldn’t mind finding a spot do that, too!😉

991. i wonder….

that rock over there
hiding out in the bushes—
it’s looking at me!

It looks like it might be a little afraid.  Is it lost? Has it been watching me all along?  Is it all alone?  I wonder…. Do rocks have feelings?  Do they have a soul?
