1141. birds in the sky

from nowhere
to who knows where
black birds
*
exciting at first
then a little bit scary
then nothing

Like birds in the sky, feelings and thoughts come flying in from nowhere then fly away to who-knows-where.

We think all the time, that’s just what people do.  We think….and we feel. Thoughts and feelings go together. We’re convinced by them….we hold on to them…too long, sometimes. Can we let them go to just fly away like birds in the sky.

1140. everything

summer grasses
sun shines….sky opens up….
everything sings

The thing I love about being by the ocean is all that sky…. and the sand and the sea and the shells washed up on the shore and the seagulls and sea urchins and ocean fishes and sand crabs and sand dollars and the grasses growing on nothing but air and sunlight and I wonder if I could do the same.

The thing I love about being by the ocean is everything.

1139. life is story

and the hawk circles down

deep in the wood
the hawk slowly settles down
and waits…

“The Hawk” — 12x9” — Watercolor

This painting is from a photo I had taken on a recent walk, and it doesn’t look like anything I’ve ever done, though I remember wanting to paint and do something different. Usually, I begin with a drawing, but not this time. The first go round with this was disappointing, and I wanted to quit. But I didn’t. I kept working it. I kept working it, until it slowly began drawing me in. When it was finished I showed it to Dan, who told me that he felt a hawk looking down into this scene in the woods.

It’s interesting how one thing can lead to another.

1138. monkey see monkey do

simon says:
hang right, drop down, now turn
reach up, sit down

Like monkey see monkey do, having a blast:  hanging, twisting, turning, reaching, sitting! These two monkeys were so engaging and charmingly engaged with each other, one moving with the other closely mimicking, totally together, like ‘me and my shadow.’ I wonder what their names were….
maybe Rocky and Rockette!

1137. go fly a kite!

sign….what sign?
i don’t see any sign—
go fly a kite!

Some birds prefer to stay under the radar and go about their business doing just what they do, living simply and simply living.  That’s my kinda bird!😘

1136. time and time

time and weather
and the energy of the sea
that’s sand
*
searching for shells
miles and miles on the beach
finding a rose
*
three days by the sea
fresh air and sun, seagulls fly
feeling free

Just thinking. If I go to the beach from time to time and take my time just walking, looking around, listening, lingering here and there, breathing it all in….if I do all that, maybe I’ll have more time.

1135. being there

taking it in
ocean, sand, clouds and sky
it’s alive

Not much to say….just being there is enough.

1134. waiting….

waiting
for the tide to come in….
hoping it doesn’t
*
closing my eyes
holding my breath….
will it or won’t it

Taking a risk is more fun than playing it safe.😘

1133. wish

i go for a walk
and look up at the sky
wish i could fly

Taking a little time to dream and wish and wonder,  just a little time…

1132. free-floating

watching them
4 ears 4 eyes and 2 noses
watching me

The New Math! 🧮 Today’s lesson:  4 + 4 = 1 and 1

Fun with math: math-e-matics…cat-e-matics🙀…meow-e-matics😽…purr-e-matics😻

1131. ginko stinko

down on my knees
to take a good picture….
oh no, it’s ginko!

Focusing on the soft curve of the cobblestone border, I wasn’t paying much attention to where I was kneeling, until a woman passed by and commented, “That’s really something isn’t it—all that ginko.” Only then did I take a good look and see the fan-shaped leaves and orangey-golden fruits. Oh, no! I quickly straightened up and made my way carefully over to the sidewalk. Later, when I got in the car, my nose told me I hadn’t stepped carefully enough.  Soon as I got home, I took off my shoes before stepping inside to wash the soles of my shoes, but the smell in my car lingered there another day or two.

“Ginkgo Stinko” is a cheery hoot for those familiar with the stinky smell of crushed ginko fruits, which are often described as being like rotten butter or vomit or dog poop!💩🤥

1130. i don’t know

i don’t know
i don’t know
i don’t know

Some mornings I can’t find a picture that speaks to me or I just don’t know what to say. This is one of them.

1129. just playin’ and sayin’

a big grin
from one end to the other
like the Cheshire Cat

Walking along the wooded path picking up seed pods and shaking the tiny seeds inside that clattered like little percussions or holiday noisemakers or holy rattles and shakers to call on the spirits of the day.

We were stepping to the rhythm and the beat…. then Dan, eyeing a couple heading our way, grinned and said, “I’ll give you a blessing if you give me five dollars.” The man smiled and replied, “I’ll give you two bits.”  “I’ll take it!”  We all laughed and walked on.  Having fun just playin’ and sayin’!

1128. thinking ahead

treasure chest
a pile of wood squirreled away
for snowy days!

Taking no chances, fenced in behind two fences, the wood pile packed in so tight you couldn’t get a toothpick in there! 😘

1127. dollar stores

red tweed gloves
with three white fingertips
staying connected

After dinner, we went to the Dollar Store to roam the aisles, just browsing around. It’s a fun thing to do. I chose a box of my favorite tissues, Scottie brand, they’re nice and soft. Dan chose two bottles of antibacterial soap, one for the dishes and one for the hands, and then he found texting gloves. He chose two pairs, green for him and red for me, my favorite color. With touch screen sensitivity, they’ll be handy for staying connected and keeping our hands warm inside while we use our phones outside in the cold. They were a real find!

Here’s what I like about dollar stores. You can count on them for simple household basics from chewing gum to aspirin to candles and cards to aluminum foil to reading glasses and drinking glasses to pet food and people food and socks and envelopes and coloring books and yarn and gift wrap and seasonal holiday doodads. The possibilities are endless, it’s convenient and cheap, and you never know what little surprises you might find in the Dollar Store!

1126. all things considered…

saving my seat
and keeping things warm
in the reading chair

“All Things Considered” - 9x12” -  Water Color

There’s Mikey, keeping things warm….curled up and settled down in the reading chair on her favorite blanket with books to read and a cup of coffee, a tablet, notebook, and a couple of pens. Starting the day off right!

1125. reflecting

oh no,
a paint spill in the creek—
how awful!
*
oh look,
a great white cloud in the sky—
how awesome!

Passing over the bridge and looking down into the water, my first thought: oh no, there’s a paint spill in the creek—how awful!   Then I looked up to see the sprawling band of white cloud in the sky—how awesome!  Isn’t it interesting how thoughts can change in a flash.

This brings to mind the phrase: “First thought, best thought.” And here’s another one: “Think again.”  Hmmm. Which one to follow?  Where do thoughts come from, anyway?  I’ll have to give this some thought!😘

1124. that’s Gus

autumn leaves
he just can’t get enough of them
that’s Gus!
*
when he’s happy
all the leaves around him
become happy

On the path covered over with leaves, Gus doesn’t hesitate. He dives right in. It doesn’t take much to be happy, if you just let yourself dive in.

1123. big foot

skinny tree
with leaves big enough to count
all the way up

That’s an Umbrella Magnolia. Isn’t she pretty.  With leaves that can grow up to 24” long and 10” wide, it’s also called the Big-Foot Tree. No wonder!

1122. ebb and flow

at peace with itself,
the dry creekbank filling up
with leaves
*
the old creek, run dry,
filling and flowing with
the sound of leaves

Life ebbs and flows, an idea comes and goes.  When things run dry….wait. Something new will come along. The wind blows. Like the seasons and the tides, everything in life flows in cycles—likes and dislikes, ideals and opinions, emotions and relationships, politics and power, knowledge and wisdom. Things come and go in their own time.

1121 . “things”

looking outside
seeing what’s behind me
inside
*
inside
the thing is the thing
outside

Sometimes I think my camera has a mind of its own! When I’m trying to focus in on one thing, the camera’s doing it’s own thing. So when I stop trying to control things and just let things happen, I just might discover a surprise thing!😉

1120. on the way home

i held in my sneeze
looking up into the sun
to catch the geese

Looking up into the sun makes me sneeze.

Yesterday, on the way home, the unmistakable sounds of geese overhead made me stop and look up at the sky. The glare of the sun was strong….made me want to sneeze….I couldn’t see the geese but kept clicking the camera anyway.

For me, there’s something special about geese in flight, with their loud honking sounds way up in the air and their flying formations all together. I always stop and look up….and watch. I don’t know why but it makes me think of home. My mother grew up in Prague. She once told me that during the war, at the warning sound of sirens, her job was to carry the family’s goose down into the air raid shelter.

1119. on a mission

wooly bear
in the middle of the trail
on a mission
*
outta my way!
i’ve got places to go
and things to see

Leg for leg, this tiny little caterpillar heading in my direction was zipping along faster than me, like it had something important to do. It was on a mission! I stopped to take a couple of quick pictures then watched it scurrying on its way.

According to legend, these little brown and black caterpillars, called wooly bears, are forecasters of the winter weather to come. The more black color, the harsher the winter, and the more rusty-brown, the milder. Looks to me like it’s going to be an easy winter. We’ll see.😘

1118. top-heavy

just one leaf
on the teeny tiny tree—
top-heavy!

Some days going out into the woods can be like walking through a magical mystery show, where the Master Magician, with a wave of its hand, leaves a single leaf 🍁 suspended in mid air at the top of an impossibly skinny little tree….and you stop and stare and say to yourself, “How does that happen?”  That’s life!😘

1117. cucumber magnolia

looking up
as if he just discovered
that tree

Yesterday for the longest time, he just stood there, looking up at the tall towering tree as if he had just seen it for the very first time. This wasn’t so. He’s painted two portraits of this tree, I’ve seen them. And for years now, he’s passed by during walks in the woods and stopped at this tree and lingered here gazing up, then taking pictures….gazing more, then lingering, in no hurry to leave….the way you do with a long lost friend or faithful lover.

1116. red poems

leaves so red
they look artificial—
the moon is pale
*
the moon is white
the leaves are red, red, red—
so are my socks
*
when in doubt
what to write about—
do it in red!

Red is my favorite color!

1115. the observatory

hey you:
wake up, look up, lighten up—
here comes the sun!

The Observatory -  9x12” -  gouache, graphite*

“The sky is not the limit. Your mind is.” Marilyn Monroe.   A thought popped into my head, and I said….what if? What if I just go with the flow and enjoy my problems instead of making more problems out of my problems. How would things look then?  So, with nowhere to go and time on my hands, I changed my mind, expanded my perspective, opened up the view….and began to paint. There is no end to possibilities.

*(Chestnut Hill College from one day to the next)

1114. on the bright side

stuck inside—boo!
there’s yesterday, and then today….
still stuck inside—yay!

It’s 6AM and 29° outside, freezing cold! 🥶 She opens the curtains, rolls up the shade to peek out there. There’s a hard frost all around the windows of her car. 🚙 Boo! Then she remembers….she doesn’t have to scrape the windows in the freezing cold ‘cause she’s still stuck inside.😁Yay! Just goes to show you if you wait long enough, you’ll see the bright side of everything.😉

1113. works in progress

carefully laid out
the start of an art project
100 doves

Mikey thinks
it looks much better
this way!😸

From ancient times after the great flood, when Noah sent out a dove and it returned with an olive branch (a symbol of dry land nearby), the white dove has come to represent peace with God, innocence, and purity. I’m working on folding a total of 300 white origami doves that will be mounted and hung from a bamboo pole to commemorate the countless innocent lives lost in the Israel-Hamas war.

1112. frost warning

rush of color
slowing down into silence
black & white

*
summer’s over
seeing the beauty now
in black & white
*
morning glories
having lost their coloring
still full of life

Colors speak louder than words, black and white quiets my mind to a moment of silence.

(Still unable to go outside, scrolling through my albums and experimenting to find a picture to think about and post for today.)
