1877. autumn in the woods

My first time in weeks walking in the woods along the creek. I realized how much I had been missing this. I took my time walking along the trail until dark as the half moon followed me back home.

delightful, and yet
that unmistakable scream
a far away hawk

Walking along the edge of the woods, I heard that unmistakable scream. Faint as it was, I knew it was a redtail hawk. I don’t know why, but it always thrills me and every time I stop, searching the sky hoping to find a hawk soaring high. This one was perched, facing west, at the very top of a far off tree. Several minutes later, circling back on our walk, the hawk hadn’t moved and was still there looking westward. I took his picture.

It was the best of times, a perfect holiday gathering— turkey with gravy and mashed potatoes and string beans almondine and glazed carrots and baked sweet potatoes with apples and cranberry sauce. The eight of us sitting around the dining room table, talking and laughing and eating and playing a game of “Who Does Conor Look Like?” and reminiscing “Who Were You In Another Lifetime?” We all sat around the table for hours, taking it all in with good gusto!😃 Then it was time to watch NFL football and work on a Christmas jigsaw puzzle with apple pie🥧 and pumpkin pie🥧 and peppermint tea. So much to be grateful for. I can’t wait for Thanksgiving next time around!😘
